L-Tryptophan Versus Valerian Root for Dog Sleep: My Verdict

Neither ingredient is a sedative, and treating them like one is the fastest way to waste a month on the wrong tool.

Here is my call: if your dog’s problem is a wound-up nervous system that won’t downshift at bedtime, start with L-tryptophan and give it real time. If the problem looks more like situational nerves — a storm, a car ride, a visitor at the door — valerian root has the longer folk-and-integrative track record, even without dog-specific trials behind it. I don’t reach for either one expecting a light switch. I reach for them expecting a gradual change in how the body settles, the way a spine settles into better movement over weeks of adjustment rather than one session.

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid — a dog’s body can’t make it, so it has to come from food or a supplement. Where the evidence is thin

Nobody has isolated tryptophan alone against a placebo in a well-powered canine sleep trial. What exists is mostly anxiety-behavior research, not sleep-architecture research, and owner-report outcomes carry real bias. I tell owners: treat tryptophan as a structure/function support for a calmer baseline nervous system, not a proven sleep aid on its own.

What valerian root is actually built to do

Valerian works on a different lever. The working theory is that it raises GABA activity in the brain — GABA is the neurotransmitter that dampens excitatory nerve signaling, which is the same general mechanism behind several prescription sedatives, just much gentler.   1. Rule out pain and medical causes first — restlessness that’s worse after rest or on stairs is a different problem than a nervous system that won’t settle.

  3. Choose a consistent delivery form and stick to the label dose for four to six weeks before judging it.
