My call up front: if you’re choosing one supplement for an aging dog, fish oil is the one with the evidence to justify the spend. NAD+ precursor chews aren’t a scam, but they’re a newer, thinner-evidenced category riding on a genuinely interesting human-longevity story that hasn’t yet been replicated at scale in dogs.

Before you buy either one, check:

  • Does the fish oil product state actual EPA/DHA milligrams per chew or capsule, not just “fish oil” on the front label?
  • Is the NAD+ chew’s active ingredient named and dosed (nicotinamide riboside, NR, or a nicotinamide mononucleotide) rather than hidden behind a proprietary blend?
  • Has your dog had recent bloodwork — specifically triglycerides and a lipid panel — that would change how much fish oil is safe to add?
  • Is there a NASC seal or third-party Certificate of Analysis you can actually find, not just a claim of one?
  • Are you trying to address a named problem (stiffness, dull coat, slowing gait) or a vague “vitality” goal? The answer changes which ingredient earns priority.
  • Does the product make a lifespan claim (“adds years”) anywhere on the label or site? That’s a red flag regardless of which category it’s in.

I read labels the way I read a chemistry panel: for what’s actually there, not what the packaging implies. Below is the scoring behind that checklist.

The myth: “vitality” supplements are interchangeable

Both categories get marketed under the same word — vitality — and that’s the problem. Fish oil and NAD+ precursors don’t do the same job in a senior dog’s body, and treating them as competing options for the same shelf slot is where owners get steered wrong. Fish oil supplies long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) that get incorporated into cell membranes and modulate inflammatory signaling. NAD+ precursors supply a substrate for cellular energy metabolism and DNA repair pathways that naturally decline with age. They’re not rivals. They’re not substitutes. And the evidence base behind each is not remotely the same size.

In my practice, the dogs who get “vitality chews” added to their routine are almost never the dogs with a diagnosed problem — they’re the dogs whose owners noticed something soft and hard to name. I saw a 10-year-old spayed female Labrador, about 68 pounds, brought in because she’d stopped jumping into the back of the SUV that spring, something she’d done without hesitation for eight years. Her owner had already started her on an NAD+ chew two months earlier, based on a podcast recommendation, with no change in the jumping. Her bloodwork showed a mildly elevated ALT and a triglyceride level that was fine but worth tracking given her breed. We started omega-3s at a joint-support dose, rechecked her lipid panel at eight weeks to make sure the added fat load wasn’t pushing triglycerides up, and by the twelve-week recheck her owner reported she was back to jumping in “most days.” That’s one dog, not a trial — but it’s the pattern I see most often: an ingredient chosen for its story, not for what the dog’s actual presentation calls for.

What the NAD+ precursor trial actually showed — and didn’t

The strongest data point for canine NAD+ supplementation is a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of a combined senolytic and NAD+ precursor (LY-D6/2), published in Scientific Reports. Seventy dogs with mild to moderate cognitive impairment were split into placebo, low-dose, and full-dose groups. Outcomes were owner-reported scores on the Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Rating (CCDR) scale plus objective physical-activity monitoring. Fifty-nine dogs completed the three-month primary endpoint and 51 reached the six-month secondary endpoint; the full-dose group showed improved owner-assessed cognitive scores relative to placebo.

That’s a real, well-designed study — and it’s also one trial, in dogs already showing cognitive impairment, using a specific combination product rather than an NAD+ precursor alone. It tells you something about a senolytic-plus-precursor combination in cognitively impaired dogs. It does not tell you that an NAD+ chew will improve “vitality” in a healthy senior dog with no cognitive symptoms, and no product on the market has replicated this exact result with NAD+ precursor alone. Safe is a lower bar than effective, and both matter separately.

Where fish oil’s evidence is deeper

Omega-3 fatty acids have a longer, broader research base in dogs, covering joint comfort, skin and coat, and — closer to the “vitality” framing — cognition. A study on dietary supplementation with a nutrient blend containing arginine, antioxidants, B vitamins, and fish oil found PubMed: cognitive enhancement in old dogs, though it’s worth noting fish oil was one component of a multi-ingredient blend, not tested alone. The tradeoff with fish oil isn’t efficacy, it’s dosing and format. Too much, too fast, in a dog with borderline lipid values can push triglycerides higher, which is why I check a lipid panel before recommending a real dose rather than the label’s blanket suggestion. Reading the label the way you’d read a chemistry panel

An analyte on a lab report only means something in the context of a reference interval — a triglyceride value of 200 mg/dL reads differently in a Miniature Schnauzer than in a Greyhound. Supplement labels deserve the same scrutiny. “NAD+ precursor” without a stated milligram dose of nicotinamide riboside or nicotinamide mononucleotide is a marketing phrase, not a spec. “Fish oil” without an EPA/DHA milligram count per chew tells you almost nothing about diagnostic-grade omega-3 dosing. I want the analyte named and the amount quantified before I’ll credit a claim, and I’d extend that same standard to any product regardless of category or price point.

Format matters here too, and not in the way marketing usually frames it. A precursor delivered in a chew still has to survive first-pass metabolism the same way it would in a capsule; the chew format is a palatability and compliance choice more than a bioavailability one.   2. Name the specific change you’re seeing (gait, sleep, coat, cognition) rather than shopping for a generic “vitality” fix.
  3. If the concern is joints, skin, coat, or general inflammation, start with a dosed fish oil product that states EPA/DHA milligrams per serving.
  4. If the concern is specifically cognitive — disorientation, altered sleep-wake cycles, house-training lapses in a previously reliable dog — an NAD+ precursor is a reasonable add-on to discuss with your vet, with expectations set by the single trial behind it, not the marketing copy.
  5. Recheck bloodwork at 8–12 weeks if you’ve started fish oil at a therapeutic dose, and track the specific symptom you named in step 2, not a vague sense of “doing better.”

Where this leaves the verdict

Fish oil is the better-supported default for most senior dogs because the evidence spans joints, coat, and some cognitive outcomes, and dosing is well characterized enough to titrate against real bloodwork. NAD+ precursor chews aren’t disqualified — the Scientific Reports trial is a legitimate, well-designed data point — but it’s one combination product, in cognitively impaired dogs, not a blanket “vitality” claim for every aging dog. Read the label and the bloodwork before you read the claim on the front of either box.
