The first thing I check when an owner tells me their dog is “anxious” isn’t the dog’s mood. It’s the dog’s gait. That’s not a reason to dismiss diffusers. It’s a reason to use them the way the studies used them: as a situational tool deployed around a specific, time-limited stressor — a boarding stay, a thunderstorm season, a string of vet visits — rather than as a background fix for a dog with a chronic anxiety pattern.

Where oral calming aids fit — and where they thin out

Oral calming aids are a different mechanism entirely, and the ingredient matters more than the category. That’s a meaningfully better signal than it had a few years ago, though the effect was described as reducing anxiety indicators, not eliminating them, and the study measured a single stressor type.

L-theanine, the amino acid pulled from green tea, has a thinner file. A clinical evidence review by SkeptVet walked through the available trials and concluded the research base is limited and low-quality enough that no confident claim about meaningful benefit can be made yet, despite one open-label study reporting improved anxiety scores in storm-sensitive dogs. I don’t rule L-theanine out for a dog whose owner has tried it and seen a real difference. I just won’t tell a new client to expect one.

One thing both ingredient classes share: neither is a controlled substance, and neither is required to prove efficacy before it reaches a shelf. That’s where a manufacturing standard, not a marketing claim, becomes the useful filter. Products carrying the National Animal Supplement Council seal have passed facility audits and independent label-accuracy testing — worth checking regardless of which ingredient you pick, since it tells you the dose on the label is the dose in the chew. It says nothing about whether that dose works for your dog.
