Pick quercetin if your dog is already in the senolytic conversation — mobility decline, cognitive slowing, a vet weighing cellular-senescence-adjacent options. Pick resveratrol if you’re after a broader antioxidant and stress-modulation supplement with a longer, if thinner, track record. Neither has dog-specific evidence strong enough to call it a longevity drug, and neither replaces diet, weight management, or a joint-and-mobility plan.

Two polyphenols, two different jobs

Resveratrol and quercetin both show up on longevity-supplement labels next to each other, as if they’re interchangeable. They aren’t. Resveratrol is a stilbene compound concentrated in grape skins and Japanese knotweed, studied mostly for antioxidant and metabolic effects. Quercetin is a flavonoid found in many fruits and vegetables, and it’s the one drawing real attention right now for a specific mechanism: senolytic activity, meaning it may help clear senescent (“zombie”) cells that accumulate with age and secrete inflammatory signals. That’s a meaningfully different job than general antioxidant support, and it changes how I think about which dogs might benefit from which compound.

Beyond that, most of what’s cited for resveratrol’s “longevity” reputation comes from rodent and human cell studies, which don’t automatically translate to dogs’ different metabolism and lifespan biology.

Quercetin’s case: the senolytic angle, still early

Quercetin’s newer relevance comes from senolytic research — the study of compounds that selectively clear senescent cells. A review in Journal of Veterinary Science: Veterinary Science covering anti-aging strategies for dogs discusses quercetin, often paired with dasatinib or fisetin, as part of an emerging senolytic toolkit, including preclinical work on canine valve interstitial cells where senolytic treatment reduced senescence markers. A separate kennel-dog trial published in Animals (MDPI) tested a supplement combining bromelain, Lentinula edodes, and quercetin, and reported measurable effects on antioxidant capacity and fecal/cortisol parameters — useful, but it’s a combination product, so you can’t cleanly attribute the effect to quercetin alone. The senolytic angle is the most exciting reason quercetin gets mentioned in longevity conversations, but “preclinical” and “early trial” are doing a lot of work in that sentence. It is not yet the kind of evidence I’d use to promise an owner a change in their dog’s trajectory.

Start with one compound at a time, not both simultaneously, so you can actually observe what changes. Use products that disclose sourcing and third-party testing — if a label won’t tell you where the resveratrol or quercetin comes from, that’s a reason to pass. Neither resveratrol nor quercetin extends a dog’s life — no supplement does, and any label implying otherwise is overselling structure/function ingredients. What they offer is targeted support: resveratrol leaning toward antioxidant and stress-response support with more tolerance data behind it, quercetin leaning toward the newer senolytic conversation with promising but early mechanism data. In my clinic, I default to matching the compound to what’s actually going on with the dog — an anxious, stressed kennel dog is a different case than a senior showing early mobility slowing — rather than picking one because it’s trending.
